United Way of Greater Lorain County is proud to collaborate with numerous other organizations across Lorain County to help working families save money by providing free income tax preparation and filing. Trained, IRS-certified volunteers prepare income taxes at no charge to families throughout Greater Lorain County with professionalism and confidentiality. Individuals, families and the elderly save valuable money in tax preparation fees by having volunteers file their taxes for them.
Volunteers are needed! No experience is required, free training is provided, enjoy flexible hours and there will be several locations throughout Lorain County. At tax sites, volunteers handle intake and screening and help with tax preparation. In addition, volunteers can expose families to other valuable programs and services such as financial literacy counseling and Affordable Care Act options. These programs and services can open the doors to financial independence and a better future.
Training and certification are mandatory to prepare taxes. Following your training and passage of the certification exams, you may begin signing up for your tax sites and dates below.
Basic certification is required to prepare returns. Advanced is optional, but if you already have some tax knowledge or want to learn more in depth tax preparation skills, Advanced preparers are always in demand. Basic and Advanced trainings have already occurred, but you are able to train yourself online. Simply email firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Software training and interactive role playing (mock tax appointments) will be offered January 21st and January 28th from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. It is strongly encouraged everyone to consider attending software training, even just for a short time. Feedback from volunteers in previous years has been that the software training is incredibly helpful in getting started with volunteering. You’re welcome to start signing up for your tax sites now; you can simply enter the "ilovetaxes" code below and sign up.
Thinking the actual preparation of taxes might not be your style but still want to help out? We have opportunities for greeters. Greeters help the clients get signed in and check that they have their proper documentation. Greeters only need to take a standards of conduct (ethics) quiz which is available online.
Speak a second language? We always have a need for translation services, especially for Spanish speakers. You can serve as a translator alone, a greeter and translator, or a preparer and translator. To be a translator alone, you only need to take a standards of conduct (ethics) quiz which is available online.
Missed our Saturday training? Trainings are available online. If that is something you are interested in, please contact Emily at here.
